honestly I believe at this point it’s more worth educating people on the gender binary and showing them that it’s not black and white than trying to drill this tired message of feminism into people (men) who have been desensitised to it and don’t want to listen anymore. if people understand what the gender binary is and start to move away from it we can fix so many of the problems that feminism wants to fix. I’m sick of this Men Vs Women and now this Men For Women shit

I honestly believe that other entertainment communities have these problems but don’t talk about them. I’m proud that when we find out someone is being completely disgusting, we don’t try to sweep it under the rug. We don’t let them back in to perform at the Grammies next year. We don’t pretend they’re too big to be packed up in a box and removed.

I’m not saying we couldn’t do a better job. But I’m proud of how the community has handled this. Particularly Laci, who is amazing.

I’m incredibly proud of Laci and the other YouTubers who’ve spoken out against Sam Pepper and previous sexual assault that’s taken place in the YouTube community. I was happy to add my voice as a YouTuber, as a woman and as a survivor of sexual assault because this shit needs to stop.

Buuuuut let’s not congratulate ourselves just yet. Cause SOMEONE has been welcomed back to Vidcon year after year even though that SOMEONE got on stage at Vidon and told completely inappropriate and racist jokes to the delight of over 7k children. And….they haven’t been dismissed from Vidcon. That same mysterious someone has built an ENTIRE CAREER off of racist stereotypes, blackface, rape jokes and peodophilia jokes. And then that someone goes and does videos with everyone and their mother on YouTube and everyone holds hands and shouts “community!” while they rake in lots of Adsense dollars. And when I talk about how upsetting and problematic this content is, that person’s teenage fans call me the n-word and tell me to kill myself. I WONDER where they learned that from???

At the beginning of this month I exchanged Tumblr messages and then emails with John Green about the rampant racism on YouTube and what could be done about it. I stressed to him how important it was for allies like you and John to speak up because your audience is so impressionable and takes every word you say as gospel. Not to mention the fact that two white dudes speaking about social issues is considered revolutionary. FYI when POC talk about these issues it’s called “playing the race card”. Since my last lengthy email to John detailing content suggestions he’s yet to get back to me. I realize you’re both incredibly busy writing books, making movies, planning conferences, and congratulating yourselves on Tumblr but you guys probably talk right? So when are we going to stop sweeping the trend of hugely problematic racist content under the rug and talk about it? Lemme know, cause I’m here.

Laci Green, outspoken Sex Ed Youtuber and the woman behind the Open Letter to Sam Pepper, has apparently started receiving threatening emails from Sam himself. The @sam-pepper.co.uk email address that has sent the emails is listed on his Twitter as his official website and business address.

Laci Green will be posting a video in response later this afternoon. Will post once it’s available.

This guy is such a fucking scumbag

    I AM A FUCKING IDIOT

my macbook slipped off my bed onto the floor, but it didn’t fall badly at all and it would be unharmed, if it weren’t for the fact that my headphones were plugged into the jack. the knock to the floor has caused the plug to push further in than it should go, leaving a dent on the outside around the jack and clear damage on the inside, judging by the quiet and distorted sound that now happens if you have anything plugged into it

my applecare ran out last friday though i’m not sure they cover for me being a fucking idiot

either way, this is probably going to be a really expensive repair, and it isn’t one i can afford. what an absolute tosser.

Can a thin person have body image struggles? Can a thin person be at war with their self-image? Can a thin person hate to look in the mirror?

    Absolutely.

    And does that suck?

    Absolutely.

But the difference between these negative feelings and fatphobia is this: The only person worrying about whether or not I’m meeting beauty standards is me.

And that’s not the same for fat folk.

When you’re not thin, other people on the beach actually do take offense. When you’re not thin, people really do think that you shouldn’t be in a bathing suit. When you’re not thin, people really do make your body their moral obligation.

And while your internal struggle is real and significant, the point is: You might hate your body, but society doesn’t.

    That’s thin privilege.
    —

Let’s Talk About Thin Privilege — Everyday Feminism (via samanticshift)

You ain’t got people legitimately denying you job and educational opportunities because of the fact that you are thin.

You will not have people taking your picture in disgust and have them use it as ‘motivation’ to not be like you.

You are represented in all forms of media in an overwhelmingly POSITIVE light.

Plain and simple. There is no place in this world where thin people are not put up as the ideal.

So can we stop acting as if someone being individually teased for being skinny is the same as the systematic way that fat people are told their bodies are always wrong because morality?

and whilst i completely agree with the last thing i reblogged and fully acknowledge my privilege, i stand by the opinion that the issue will never be fixed as long as one group is knocking down the other in order to rise up, but whatev, probs on my own on that one. i don’t expect the conversation to always be about me, my size group. but when people are taking hits to defend something else??? i don’t get it, i never will

smallthetalk said: I just tried to find your comment on the Sam Pepper video to try to push it up, but youtube only shows me the last 4 hrs of comments...But, could you please remind people, if they want to raise awareness on any on his video, not to argue with his fans but reply to peole they agree with? As far as I know, more replies to a comment means it becomes a "top comment". If you like a comment it just gets moved down, but replies keep it at the top. Thanks!

    liamdryden:

My comment maaayyy have been deleted (as that was apparently happening quite a lot to other people), but it’s still available to read and interact with on my Google+, so perhaps not?

Either way, yes. YouTube’s comment algorithm is horrendous. It treats any comment with high activity as a Top Comment, no matter how inflammatory or thumbed-down it is (in fact thumbing down only adds to this. Like, seriously YouTube, what).

So don’t try and engage with Sam’s supporters. I’ve found it’s like arguing with a pastel-coloured wall anyway. Don’t even thumb them down. Instead, only interact with and support the comments you agree with. Encourage critical discussion and force readers of the comments to see another side.
